Overview

What is Smart Growth?
Smart Growth is essentially a means to make more sustainable development choices in an effort to create vibrant urban centres, sustain a strong economy, ensure a healthy environment and combat urban sprawl.
At the 2001 Smart Growth Summit, Smart Growth Principles were developed and presented as key elements of the approach.
These principles include: a mix of land uses, compact built form, range of housing, walkable neighbourhoods, attractive communities, preservation of farmland and natural resources, directing development into existing communities, offering a variety of transportation choices, making development predictable and cost effective, and encouraging community stakeholder collaboration.
